It may seem superficial to some, but my home is a sanctuary for me—a place where I can find rest and peace. And the way my home looks, even if I’m the only one looking at it, is important. So when I had my babies, it became important that all the “stuff” that came with them blended well into my home decor.

When I found out that I was pregnant with a baby girl, I couldn’t believe it. My husband’s family comes from a line of boys, and his brother has boys, so I thought I was destined to have another boy. I almost didn’t believe it and didn’t really allow myself to get excited until I went to our 20-week ultrasound to reconfirm the gender. I couldn’t wait to design our baby girl’s nursery and create a haven for her. I grew up by the beach, so coastal has always been my style. (You can see her brother’s ocean-themed nursery and now his big boy coastal room for other inspiration.) But for her room, I wanted it to feel a bit more feminine and pretty, so I went with a Palm Beach chic theme for her nursery. I have to say, it’s one of my favorite rooms in our house.

Crib

One of the most important places in a baby’s nursery is their crib area. This is where your baby will be spending the majority of her time.

Dresser

We used the dresser in Liam’s old nursery for the changing station, and I think it looks even better in her room. It’s the Ava Regency Extra Wide Dresser & Topper Set from PBK. Glider

A glider was something that I didn’t have in my son’s nursery when he was a baby that I knew I needed this time around. Having a comfortable chair that I can sit in, rock, and relax while nursing or bottle-feeding my baby is important to me. I’ve always loved Monte Design gliders for their beautiful handcrafted and sustainably made designs. They use the highest quality materials and have exceptional customer service. Seating area

In this nursing nook, I put a side table next to the glider with the Hatch Rest + and a cute frame with baby girl’s ultrasound picture inside. The table will come in handy when I need to have my water bottle, snacks, or other items nearby. The Hatch Rest + will tell me the time and is the perfect night light and sound machine if I need to nurse her at night in her room but don’t want to turn bright lights on. Next to the side table, I put a cute pineapple standing lamp to help with extra lighting if I need it. I thought the frame and lamp were great for our Palm Beach themed nursery.

On the other side of the glider, I have two pehr blush pom pom storage bins (the mini and the bin). Inside I’ve stored some muslin swaddles from aden + anais as well as my Wildbird ring slings. Above it hangs two floating shelves from Minted with some of our favorite books and some artwork.

And at the foot of the glider, I have this beautiful leather pouf to help raise and relax my feet. This will help me with lower back support and posture when nursing my baby.

Storage

One corner of her nursery is perfect for storage, and I knew I could add some extra pieces for decor. I got this six-cube organizer shelf to store her books, toys, and whatever else we need to keep close.

Since the nursery is a Palm Beach Chic vibe, I thought the Palm Beach Chic book and the Mother and Child book would be perfect pieces of decor for this corner. To help keep everything organized, I got these watercolor scallop fabric storage bins from Minted. These cute, unique prints put a fun spin on storage essentials. They are made of sturdy cotton canvas with an easy-access leather handle that you can personalize with your child’s name. Love them!

Hanging above, I found this scallop pinboard that I think will grow perfectly with her as she gets older. We’ll be able to hang her pictures, artwork, or anything else that we’d like to admire. I also added a fun mermaid tail felt garland to continue the Palm Beach feel to her nursery.

Play

Playtime and tummy time are also important for baby. When looking for the right play gym, this pink ocean play gym from Scandiborn stood out to me immediately because it is too perfect for her Palm Beach nursery theme! The soft shell-shaped gym with arches to hang soft toys that attract the baby’s attention is a great place to play and engage with our little one.

We used another item with our firstborn that I knew we needed to use again for baby girl: the Dock-A-Tot. This thing was a godsend when we needed our son to wind down. It’s an ideal spot for babies for supervised lounging, playing, resting, cuddling, diaper changes, and tummy time. I can’t believe that my baby boy is now three years old. It feels like it wasn’t long ago when I was designing his ocean-themed nursery. But he is definitely not a baby anymore, and he has the energy and attitude to prove it! 😉 I had been putting off redesigning his nursery into a big boy room because he has been sleeping so well. But now that we are expecting baby #2 and he was turning three years old, it was definitely time. Before: Nursery

In his nursery, I wanted to feel like I was at a beach. I chose light greens, blues, and white to make it feel like I was near the ocean. After: Big Boy Room

For Liam’s big boy room, I wanted to keep several things that were in his nursery. But some of the items had to go because they felt a little too nursery-like. I wanted to create a space that could really grow with him. I think I did just that, and it turned out great!

Mattress

The next piece that was really important to me was choosing the right mattress for our big boy’s bed.

We spend such a significant amount of time of our lives on our mattresses. It’s important to me that what my son lies on and is breathing in is healthy and non-toxic. And I needed something above his bed. I thought a surfboard sign with his name on it would be a great fit. I found this one on Etsy and love it.

Something else that we added to his bed is the Dream Weighted Blanket. It’s designed to keep our kids warm and cozy, and deliver calming comfort, security, and promote healthy sleep patterns. Liam has a lot of energy, so this blanket helps him calm down when it’s time to wind down for naps and bedtime. It’s also great for games of peek-a-boo. 😉

Bedrails

You can’t forget about safety when it comes to sleep. We got two swing-down bedrails for each side of his full-size bed. Each measures 43-inches long and 20-inch tall for added security. Even though his bed is up against the wall, we’ve heard of a child getting stuck between his bed and wall and suffocating. Safety is always our priority, so we thought it was best to get two bedrails for this reason. I love how these can easily swing down, so it makes removing the Beddy’s covers easier as well as making the bed in the mornings.

Nightstand

Next to his bed, we wanted to have a good nightstand for him to have a place to put his things and keep a lamp. When we discovered Milk Street Baby and their high-quality furniture pieces, we knew we found what we had been looking for.

I knew that this room needed some curtains to bring the room together. Sitting Corner

There is a little nook in the corner of Liam’s room that I wanted to make into a cozy place for him to sit and play or read. Dresser

Another big item that I wanted to replace was his dresser. The one we had in his nursery felt a little too “baby,” so we decided that it would be best to move that into his upcoming baby sister’s room. Entry-wall

When you first walk into Liam’s room, there is a little wall space. It looked bare without anything, so I looked for some items that could add function and style. The modern stitch fabric with a whitewashed herringbone frame is beautiful on this pinboard. Below it, I chose the matching whitewashed herringbone artful shelf to place some of his favorite books that he likes to read before bedtime. Monitor

Even though our boy is not a baby anymore, I am still keeping a monitor in his room. Its camera scans, tilts, and zooms and has a magnetic mount so you can prop it up on the wall in just the right position. It is also Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant compatible, allowing you to control it anywhere in the house, while Wi-Fi connectivity lets you view your nursery from your smartphone no matter where you are.

In the final area in his room across from his bed, we kept his bookshelves. Storage is always needed. There I have placed items that Liam’s received since birth as well as photos and special memories. I have his birth shadow box, a Pehr pom-pom bin to store some of his stuffed animals, and more. To the left is his wooden growth chart and blowfish storage basket, and to the right is a mint pouf and a triptych of an aerial beach picture. It was a lot of wall space, so these pieces added function and style.

If space and budget aren’t a primary concern, the sky’s the limit for playroom inspiration and designing! When keeping your little one’s play space in mind, try to think long-term when possible. Do you want to do an overhaul every few years? Add a good amount of storage, some creative seating, and a theme that will grow with them (like zoo animals, flowers, etc.). These are swoon-worthy!

Best Uses of Space

Tiny homes and apartments are wonderful spots for children to grow up in, but littles still need a bit of their own space from time to time! Although they may be adorable and small, newborn babies come with a lot of “stuff.” Among the little clothes, diapers, and furniture, there is much to consider when decorating, arranging, and organizing a nursery. Naturally, you want to ensure the nursery looks as cute as your baby! Here are a few tips for a functional, well-organized, and beautiful nursery.

1. Arranging the Furniture for Function

Many soon-to-be moms and dads have the walls painted and pick out bedding, mobiles, and perfect outfits before considering buying and arranging the furniture. Cribs, changing tables, dressers, and gliders take up a lot of space. You want them to look great, but placing them in practical spots in the room is even more important.

To help create flow in the room, functionality should be considered a top priority in a nursery.

The function of the room depends on the activity. In this case, think about sleeping, feeding, playing, changing diapers and clothes, and so on. Ask yourself what you will be doing the most often. Optimal spacing and safety are important when locating key furniture pieces for a comfortable and convenient nursery. The crib is one of the focal pieces (and most used pieces) of furniture. After rocking or feeding the baby, the transition to the crib should be as smooth as possible. Keep a small nightstand or side table near the rocker and place a dim lamp on it. This item can be ideal for bedtime books and empty bottles after feedings. A small drawer in the nightstand can hold easy-to-reach cold tablets or burp cloths when needed. You also want to keep the crib away from the door so that you don’t wake them when you peek in to check on the baby. Lastly, the crib should be located away from a drafty window and away from curtains and draperies where the baby can easily reach to avoid choking or other hazards. The glider can be placed near the window so mom can look out while feeding.

Another key piece of furniture is the changing table. When changing the baby, diapers, wipes, and a fresh, clean outfit should be easily accessible without having to walk away and leave the baby. The changing table should be close to the dresser so you can easily and quickly grab an outfit. Keep the diaper pail and hamper near the changing table as well. This way, you can discard the diaper and dirty clothes without leaving the baby’s side.

2. Organizing a Dresser and Changing Station

There never seems to be enough storage for all the baby’s necessities, and traditional closets with just a standard bar to hang clothes are often not cut out for efficient use. If you lack a closet system, get creative by placing a small shelf inside a closet. Place a tension rod in the middle of a bookshelf and remove lower shelves for hanging clothes. Lack closet drawers? You can use baskets or crates for accessories, extra diapers, books, and toys. You can also use a shoe organizer on the back of a closet door for hats and accessories. Chances are you have purchased clothing the baby doesn’t quite fit into yet. Organize these clothes by month with clothing dividers.

Do you still need more storage?

Cubed shelving with bins is a great solution. A large cubed shelving unit creates extra storage and shelving, while a small unit provides a tabletop for baby’s things. Bins can hold everything from extra diapers to toys and keep them out of sight. They are also transitional and versatile for when the baby becomes a toddler. Bins can be removed, and cubes can be used as shelves for books, piggy banks, and decorative items.

3. Double Duty Decorating

Now that the furniture is placed properly, it’s time to decorate. Framing favorite nursery books or pages with illustrations makes simple DIY artwork. Of course, baby’s name or monogram is a must and adds a personal touch as well. You can also add style with a rug and wall decals. But decorating with double duty in mind is a great way to combine fashion and function. Use picture ledges on a wall to hold and display books. A row of fabric-lined wicker or wire baskets can be hung on a wall vertically or horizontally for attractive toy storage. A vintage ladder against a wall can display baby blankets and quilts.

Don’t forget about shades and curtains.

You spend one third of your life sleeping. That’s a lot of life! And where do you usually sleep? Your bed. And what’s on your bed? Your sheets. Yes, you spend 1/3 of your life in between your sheets. Add to that time spent snuggling your little ones and fur babies, eating a midnight snack, or enjoying your coffee in bed.

Our linens: sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, and towels are essentials of family life.

It takes a little less than a week to dirty a set of linens. As you sleep, sweat and oils secrete from your skin. Flakes of skin, aka dust, accumulate on your sheets. And you know who love flakes of skin? Dust mites. Gross.

Oh, and notice a breakout on your forehead? Try and remember last time you washed your pillowcases.

Do your kids leave towels piled on top of one another or left to dry in a bathroom with poor ventilation? Those can easily begin to mildew.

As moms busy working, raising little ones, and cleaning the house. It can be difficult to create rhythms for washing and replacing our linens regularly, but trust us, it’s worth it!

Avoid the dust mites–replace and refresh with these tips:

Sheets:

• Wash your sheets weekly or whenever there are visible stains. Wash in warm, instead of hot, water to avoid damage, and turn your pillowcases inside out.

  

• Be sure your sheets are completely dry before folding and storing in your linen closet to avoid mildew growth.
• Expect your sheets to last about two years, after that the fibers will start to break down from washing and drying, and it will be time to replace your sheets.

Comforter and duvet cover:

• In Europe, it’s common to forgo a top sheet. Feeling European? Wash your duvet cover weekly, otherwise, monthly is fine.
• Because it often support the weight of our bodies, your duvet cover should last 12-25 years. Refresh it every few months by hanging it on a clothesline or fluffing it up in the dryer.

Towels:

Spring is officially upon us! When the sun starts to warm things up a bit, I always feel the need to add little touches of color to my home. I’m showing you how to make a pretty little tassel garland that will add spring color to your space! You can use this garland on your mantle, in a child’s playroom, or just about anywhere. This is a very easy and cheap project you can quickly complete during a nap time. Hooray!

How to Make a Spring Tassel Garland

Supplies:

• 5-6 different colors of yarn
• scissors

Instructions:

1. First, determine how long you want your garland to be and cut a length of neutral yarn a few inches longer than your measurement. This will be the string on which all the tassels will be hung.

2. Next, start making your tassels. I found the easiest way was to hold the neutral string in my left hand, holding one end between my first two fingers and draping the length of the string back along my hand and across my thumb. Now, lie your first color of yarn on top of and perpendicular to the neutral string.

3. Wrap your colored yarn over the width of your hand about a dozen times. Cut the excess off.

4. Now, take the neutral string, holding both ends and shimmy it off your hand. The colored string should be hanging on the neutral string.

5. Gather the top of the colored loops and, using a smaller piece of colored string, wrap the small piece around the top of your colored loops about four times. Tie the ends in a knot on the back.

6. Finally, cut the bottom loops of your loops to make the tassels.

7. Repeat the process as many times and with as many different colors as you want. I made five of each colored tassel, and the project took me about an hour.

8. Tie small loops at each end of your neutral string and hang. You’re done!

I love how my cute little tassel garland looks on my mantel. For even more spring-y touches, I added a few pastel bird eggs to my mantel’s top. I think it adds a cheerful touch to my living room, but now I want to make another one to add to the kid’s playroom! They love to play with the little tassels, and it’s such a fun and easy project. DIY Wall Stencils

There’s no need to shell out the big bucks for those stick-on vinyl wall decorations when you can make your own right at home. For this project, you will need:

• Painters Tape
• Acrylic or Interior Wall Paint
• Sponge Paintbrush
• Cardboard (cereal boxes are great for this!)
• Your Own Stencil Image

Choose an image that you know will appeal to your child, such as hearts, stars or flowers. You can draw this image onto a piece of paper or print out a picture off the internet. The steps are super easy:

1. Trace your chosen image onto the cardboard and cut it out.
2. Use painters tape to attach your DIY stencil to the wall.
3. Pour a little bit of paint into a shallow dish.
4. Using the sponge paintbrush, dab paint all around the stencil.
5. Remove the stencil and move it to where you want the next design to appear.
6. Repeat.

Create a Place for Their Masterpieces

When thinking of ideas for decorating your kid’s room, why not use their own artwork to decorate their special space? It’s easy to make a cute piece of wall decor that will allow them to hang and change out what they choose to display. If they are learning how to draw, paint or write, they will be proud to hang up their hard work for all to see.

You will need:

• A Piece of Scrap Wood (about 2 feet long)
• Paint
• 6 Clothespins
• Hot Glue Gun & Hot Glue Sticks

To put this project together, all you need to do is sand and paint the wood. You can always paint your child’s name or a design (or use stickers) on the top section of the wood. Next, evenly space out the clothespins and hot glue them so they are facing down. It can be cute to add washi tape or paint the exposed surface of the clothespins. Hang the board on the wall and it’s ready to hold your child’s latest creation.

Use a DIY Projector

A fabulous way to add decor and provide a nightlight is to create a DIY projector! For this project, you will need:

• Clear Plastic (Re-Use a Takeout Food Container)
• Sharpie Markers
• Flashlight
• Solid, Light Colored Wall

Have your kids draw on the plastic with the markers. They can write their name, draw their pet or make shapes. Turn off the lights, hold up the plastic and shine the flashlight through the plastic. Their image will be projected onto the wall and they will love seeing their artwork come alive!

Spice Rack Bookshelves

Using wall space for storage is a fabulous way to save floor space for playing and toys. It can be easy to become overwhelmed by books, so this cute little DIY project takes care of that problem for your little one!

You will need:

• Wooden Spice Racks
• Wall Mounting Hardware
• Paint, Stickers, Etc.

This DIY is so gratifying because it can be completed so quickly. If you choose to embellish your wooden spice racks, do so before hanging them on the wall. They can easily be painted, have stickers applied or words written on them with markers. Once they are looking fabulous, install the wall mounting hardware and hang them on the wall.

It’s advisable to screw them into studs or use strong wall anchors since they will be supporting the weight of several books. Consider hanging them at a height that your little one can easily reach to encourage them to help themselves to their favorite books whenever the mood strikes.

Easy Message Board

What you will need for this project is:

• 8×10 Picture Frame
• Scrapbook Paper
• Dry Erase Marker with Attached Eraser
• Ribbon
• Hot Glue Gun & Hot Glue Sticks

The beauty of this idea is its simplicity! Simply insert a piece of scrapbook paper into your frame. Tie one end of the ribbon to the dry erase marker and hot glue the other end of the ribbon to the frame. Now you have an adorable message board where you can write notes to each other!

It is the ideal way to save money, get creative and create a truly unique and personal space for your son or daughter.
