Why a “natural” birth? Over the past 10 years, I’ve attended hundreds of births as a birth doula — medicated and unmedicated. Some of my clients choose to have unmedicated births and are successful, and some choose pain medication from the beginning, or they change their minds in labor. Whichever you choose, do your research and decide which birthing experience is best for you.

We want everyone to know that one way of giving birth is not better than the other, and one way does not make you a better or stronger woman or mother. All birthing options are good for different circumstances, and it’s up to you to research to determine which is best for you and your baby.

So why would someone want a “natural” or unmedicated childbirth? Mary Alice and I discuss why some women forego pain medication during labor and delivery. We’re also sharing the pain medications available should you decide on having a natural birth but change your mind during labor.
