Here's what every woman should have to help her experience the best and most enjoyable third trimester.]]>
15 Third Trimester Must-Haves

You’re in your third trimester! Can you believe it? Hopefully, everything has been going smoothly so far. Now, you’re finally at the point where you’re preparing for the last few months of pregnancy and getting ready for labor. It’s so exciting! Many women describe the third trimester as the longest trimester. This is because you are getting more uncomfortable by the day, and you are beyond ready to meet your baby. You’re almost there, though! Below are my third trimester must-haves that every expecting mama should have to help her have the best and most enjoyable third trimester and prepare for birth. They may not be glamorous items, but I promise you will thank me later!

15 Third Trimester Must-Haves

Here are my must-haves for mamas in their third trimester of pregnancy:

1. Dates

It might sound ridiculous, but did you know that eating dates in your third trimester can help you have a better birth? It’s true! Research has shown that if you eat 75 grams of dates per day starting at 36 weeks from your baby’s due date, you can have an easier, shorter, and healthier labor and delivery.1 Some of the benefits include:1,2

 • Being more likely to go into spontaneous labor
 • Having a shorter first stage of labor
 • Being more likely to have intact membranes
 • Being less likely to use Pitocin to induce labor
 • Having a lower rate of cesarean section
 • Having a lower rate of needing vacuum or forceps during delivery

So, how many dates is 75 grams? It depends on the type of date you eat. If you eat Deglet Noor dates, you will need to eat approximately six dates per day since they are smaller. Medjool dates are about double the size, so you only need to eat three daily. And because they can help you have a better labor and delivery, they had to be on my third trimester must-haves list. Be sure to add these to your next grocery order!

2. Comfy Slip-On Shoes

With each passing day, your baby is getting bigger. Before you know it, it will feel like you are carrying a watermelon with you everywhere you go. At this point in pregnancy, the extra weight is getting harder on your feet, so getting some comfortable shoes during pregnancy is an absolute MUST! You’ll want to get a pair of flats, sandals, or comfortable sneakers (or all of them) that you can easily slip on and off to make standing and walking throughout the day a bit more bearable.

These sneakers from Rothy’s are easy to slip on, supportive, well-cushioned, and super cute. Plus, you can throw them in the washing machine if they get dirty — mom win! You can also never go wrong with a pair of Tory Burch flip-flops. A good ballet flat is also a must to elevate any outfit when you’re ready to leave the house.

3. Compression Socks

With baby getting bigger with each week of pregnancy, they can begin blocking some of your circulation. This causes swelling and water retention in your lower legs and feet, which are normal to experience during the third trimester but can be pretty uncomfortable.12,13 This is why I recommend getting compression socks. They help with excess swelling, better circulation, less pain, and fewer varicose veins.3 The gentle hug around your legs can provide the support your tired, swollen feet and legs need. Your lower legs and feet will be grateful!

4. Squatty Potty

Constipation is never fun, especially during pregnancy. It’s reported that about 11-38% of people get constipated at some point during pregnancy. Yikes! There are a few reasons why this occurs:5

 • The rising progesterone levels and falling motilin hormone levels during pregnancy slow down your bowels.
 • Your intestines’ water absorption increases, which causes stools to dry out and become harder to pass.
 • Increased vitamin supplements, like iron and calcium, can also be a contributing factor.
 • Your growing uterus can slow down the movement of your stool through your gut.

Constipation can happen in all three trimesters, but it’s most common in the third trimester, when baby is at its heaviest, putting the most pressure on your bowel. Some women even experience constipation up to three months after the baby is born.4

To help make pooping easier on you during pregnancy (or anytime), I highly recommend a squatty potty. Squatty potties keep your knees above your hips as you sit, putting your pelvic floor in an optimal position to relax and release. Posture-changing products like the squatty potty can help you go faster and empty your bowels more completely. By straining less, it helps with constipation and can help prevent hemorrhoids.6

5. Gentle Birth

Something my doula clients have taken, and I took during both of my pregnancies in the third trimester, is the Gentle Birth tincture without blue cohosh. If you read the reviews of this magical tincture, you will be shocked! So many women have reported having fast births after taking this formula. I can say this is true because I experienced it myself! My first birth was only eight hours long (three of those hours were pushing), and my second labor was only two hours long. I can’t recommend it enough, but of course, always consult with your primary healthcare provider before taking any new supplements.

6. Birth Ball

A birth ball is terrific to have during the third trimester because it can help with your posture and relieve pressure, which helps decrease the aches and pains in your back, pelvis, and tailbone. By sitting on the ball and moving your hips from front to back, side to side, and in circular motions, you keep your hips and lower back mobile. More mobility usually means less discomfort.6 I also have my doula clients use the birth ball during their third trimester because it has been shown to help increase their chances of having a vaginal delivery and reduce the likeliness of having an episiotomy.7

What’s also great about a birth ball is that you can use it during labor and after you give birth to your baby. You can use it to help support you in different laboring positions, which I found helpful when I was in labor with both of my kids. My doula clients would agree that it helped them stay more comfortable and gave them more position options when laboring in a hospital room. And during postpartum, you can bounce on the birth ball to soothe your crying baby. This saves your joints as you provide movement and comfort to your little one.

7. The Business of Being Born

If you’re pregnant (which I’m assuming you are if you are reading this article), then another third trimester must-have is to watch the documentary “The Business of Being Born.” This video was released in 2008 and shows how the American healthcare system approaches childbirth, examining hospital births, home births, obstetricians, and midwives. They interviewed parents and medical experts and showed the realities of the maternity care system. It even followed a few women during their pregnancies and birth experiences, including the director, Abby Epstein, who discovered she was pregnant while filming this documentary. I love learning about the producer Ricki Lake’s experiences and all the storytelling of what traditional birth in the hospital is really like in the U.S. If you want to know what’s going on behind the (hospital) curtain, watch this documentary.

8. Prenatal Massage

prenatal massage

In this article, we’ve discussed how you might be experiencing swollen feet and lower back pain. Growing a baby is hard work! However, another thing on my third trimester must-haves list that can help with these two discomforts (and more) is to get prenatal massages.

Husbands/partners, take note: in the third trimester, a prenatal massage is one of the best gifts you can give your wife/partner. There are so many benefits of prenatal massage:7

 • Reduced stress and anxiety
 • Decreased symptoms of depression
 • Relieved muscle aches and joint pains
 • Improved labor outcomes
 • Improved lymphatic and blood circulation
 • Mood and hormone regulation
 • Improved cardiovascular health
 • Reduction of swelling and edema
 • Improvement of nerve pain (like sciatic nerve pain)
 • Reduced back pain
 • Reduced headaches
 • Improved oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles
 • Better sleep

The benefits alone speak for themselves. Also, the evidence strongly suggests there are not only maternal health benefits but also newborn health benefits when therapeutic massage is incorporated into regular prenatal care.7

Just make sure to discuss it with your doctor or midwife beforehand. Also, check that the massage therapist you work with is licensed and certified in prenatal massage. You can ask to see documentation to confirm they have received the proper training and have the experience to safely massage you during pregnancy.

9. Chiropractic Care

Chiropractor Adjusting Pregnant Woman's Back

Establishing pelvic balance and alignment is a huge reason to obtain chiropractic care during pregnancy. Why, you ask? When the pelvis is misaligned, it may reduce the amount of room available for your baby. A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for your baby to get into the best possible position for delivery. Suppose the baby is not in an optimal position for birth. In that case, it can potentially lengthen your labor and affect your ability to have a vaginal, non-invasive birth (no forceps or vacuum).8,9 Keeping the spine aligned helps the entire body work more effectively.

Having worked with so many women during their pregnancies and labors, I can tell you that I have seen a real difference (for the better) in the women who have received chiropractic care compared to those who haven’t. (A chiropractor shares her third-trimester tips here). When looking for a chiropractor, look for one certified in the Webster Technique before you schedule an appointment.17

10. Heating Pad

It’s common for your back and hips to be more achy and sore toward the end of your pregnancy. Heat is your friend when you can’t get a massage or see a chiropractor. You can heat a rice bag or use a heating pad before you go to bed to help give you relief and relax your muscles.14

NOTE: Turn off the heating pad before you sleep to avoid overheating and burning your skin. Also, heat is a wonderful tool to help you during labor. Make sure to bring these things in your hospital bag!

11. Water Bottle

I know this is listed on my first trimester must-haves and should also be in my second trimester must-haves list. But it’s imperative to stress how essential it is to stay hydrated throughout your entire pregnancy. Staying hydrated is paramount to your comfort and health and your baby’s health.15 Invest in a giant water bottle or cup so that you don’t have to keep getting up to refill it. If plain water is getting too boring, remember to switch it up with coconut water or sparkling water or add electrolytes.

12. Raspberry Leaf Tea

Something else I recommend women in their third trimester to drink, if they aren’t already, is raspberry leaf tea. It’s a uterine toner, and there are some excellent benefits to drinking raspberry leaf tea during pregnancy. For instance, it may ease labor pains, make labor less strenuous and painful, and shorten your labor and pushing time.10,11 What pregnant woman doesn’t want those things?!

Drink 2-3 cups daily during your third trimester to help prepare your uterus for labor and delivery. It’s great for uterine health and may even help prevent post-delivery hemorrhaging.10,16 Read 10 ways to enjoy raspberry leaf tea during pregnancy.

13. Food Prep/Freezer Meals

Crop of belly - pregnant woman cooking vegetables in kitchen stirring her wooden spoon in a pot on the stove

Grab your favorite cookbook, visit your go-to food blogs, and head to the kitchen. It’s time to start cranking out some freezer meals to store away for when you have baby! I recommend having some meals in the freezer, even if you know friends and family will come by with food in your first few weeks postpartum. Quick bread, crock-pot meals, stews and soups, burritos, casseroles, etc., are your best bet for easy freezing and thawing/eating when you’re a half-asleep new parent.

14. Birth Class and Books

It’s time to move on from the pregnancy/delivery books and look at parenting resources to care for your soon-to-arrive newborn baby. “The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems” is a great book with valuable tips and advice for baby’s feeding, sleeping, and overall scheduling. Another great resource is “The Happiest Baby on the Block.” This video shows how to soothe your baby with the 5 S’s — every new parent needs to know those tricks! Finally, if you need more details and research on sleep, I recommend the book “Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child.” They talk about the science behind it all.

15. Postpartum Doula

postpartum doula

Many expecting couples are focusing on the labor and birth of their baby (and rightfully so; it’s important). But they forget to think about what happens after giving birth — taking care of the baby. Make sure you enlist some support to help you those first few weeks and months after delivery. If you don’t have anyone close by who can help, start looking into postpartum doulas in your area. They are knowledgable, are trained, and can help you with breastfeeding, pumping, bottle-feeding, showing you how to soothe your baby, learning how to swaddle, newborn care, and much more.

Whether you want help during the day or at night, a postpartum doula is a fantastic support person and resource for families. To find a postpartum doula in your area, look at DONA International and DoulaMatch.net.

An expert shares her must-haves for the second trimester of pregnancy, plus other items and activities that can be beneficial.]]>

You’ve made it through the first trimester, and now you’re in the second trimester! Woohoo! At this point, you’re hopefully feeling a lot better and more like yourself. You will still probably use some of the things off our first-trimester must-haves list, but below is my list of second-trimester must-haves that include products and services essential for a happy second trimester! Also, these would make great gifts for someone you know who is pregnant! 😉

10 Second Trimester Must-Haves

In my opinion, the second trimester is the best part of pregnancy. Hopefully, your nausea has subsided, you’re sleeping a little better, and you’re finally looking legitimately pregnant. Also, if you have suffered miscarriages in the past, this is the point when you can relax a bit, enjoy your pregnancy, and treat yourself. You deserve it! So, here are my must-haves for the second trimester:

1. A Good Probiotic

Now that you have been taking a good prenatal vitamin and prenatal DHA supplement (what I recommended in our first-trimester must-haves list), here’s another great supplement to start taking . . . a probiotic! It is generally safe to take a probiotic supplement while pregnant, and there are many great benefits to taking probiotics during pregnancy.1 As with any supplement, consult your healthcare provider before taking one.

So, why take a probiotic? One of the main reasons I recommend it is it can help reduce the colonization of Group B Streptococcus (GBS). This bacterial infection naturally lives in the intestines and migrates down to the urinary tract, vagina, and/or rectum.2 GBS is tested at 36-38 weeks of pregnancy, and about 10-30% of women are GBS positive during pregnancy.3 If the expectant mother is GBS positive, she must receive antibiotic treatment during labor (usually penicillin or ampicillin) through an IV to prevent it from passing to the baby during birth.4 Taking a good probiotic can reduce your chances of being GBS positive, helping you avoid more interventions during labor.14

2. Body Moisturizer

Mama Mio Tummy Rub Butter

They say “prevention is key” for all things skin-related. So, investing in a good body moisturizer during pregnancy is helpful. Many belly butters, oils, and belly lotions are marketed to help prevent stretch marks, but none have been scientifically proven to 100% work since stretch marks can be genetic.5 However, it never hurts to try, and moisturizing your growing skin is good. A few stretch mark creams, like body butters and oils I recommend are Burt’s Bees Mama Bee Belly ButterMotherlove Pregnant Belly Oil, Palmer’s Cocoa Butter, and my very fave, Mama Mio’s line of products.

3. Bath Pregnancy Flakes

Now that you are in your second trimester of pregnancy, your body might be experiencing more aches and pains from your growing baby.15 When you have an achy back and feel tired and weary, a long soak in a bath with some bath pregnancy flakes is the perfect little luxury. This is why these bath pregnancy flakes are on our second-trimester must-haves list!

I like these bath pregnancy flakes because they are pure magnesium. Magnesium is a wonderful mineral that has many benefits. It helps relax muscles, regulate body temperature, maintain healthy blood sugar levels, build strong teeth and bones, and much more.6 It can also help you get a more restful sleep and aid in mood stabilization.7,8

I recommend pouring half a cup into a warm bath and then relaxing and soaking in the tub for at least 20 minutes to allow the magnesium properties to absorb into your skin. You will enjoy some self-care time, and your body and mind will also thank you.

4. A Pregnancy Pillow

Pharmedoc Pregnancy Pillows, C-Shape Full Body Pillow

Finding a comfortable sleeping position when you’re expecting can be challenging. This is especially true as your belly grows, and you have to get up several times throughout the night to use the restroom. A pregnancy pillow is a second-trimester must-have item because it can help you get some sleep. Getting one during your second trimester allows you to enjoy it for a longer duration of your pregnancy (and even a few months postpartum).

A good quality pregnancy pillow can make it much easier to get comfortable and catch some Zzzs. Rather than using and trying to arrange several pillows in your bed, a pregnancy pillow replaces all of them and provides support in the right places. We know how hard your body is working to grow your sweet baby and how important sleep is. Invest in a good pregnancy pillow and give yourself the gift of sleep!

5. A Cozy Blanket

MH MYLUNE HOME Ultra Soft Leopard Throw Blanket (51x63 inches) Khaki Microfiber Blanket Plush Warm Reversible Cheetah Blanket Leopard Pattern Throw for Couch Bed Sofa

Now that you have a pregnancy pillow, you also need a cozy blanket to go with it! You want a blanket that will be soft on your skin, not too heavy (to avoid overheating), and not too light (so you stay warm). This ultra-soft throw blanket is one of my favorites, and I feel confident it will be one of yours, too! It’s perfect for snuggling up on the couch or in bed if you’re tired, feel nauseous, or want to put up your feet after a long day. I’ve even had my doula clients bring this blanket to the hospital with them for their postpartum room to stay comfortable. For the quality and the great price, it’s definitely a must-have!

6. Nasal Strips

Breathe Right Nasal Strips | Extra Strength | Clear | For Sensitive Skin

Not enough people talk about this, but some women experience congestion during pregnancy, also known as pregnancy rhinitis. If you have a stuffy nose that won’t go away, you may be experiencing this. It’s common for it to get worse when you lie down, disrupting your sleep.9 To help you breathe easier, sleep better, and hopefully stop your snoring, use these drug-free nasal strips. They help open your nose and relieve nasal congestion by increasing nasal airflow. When you sleep better, you’ll wake up less tired and can conquer another day of growing your tiny human.

7. Audible

Another (not-so-fun) experience that can happen during pregnancy is pregnancy insomnia. Even though you have your pillow, blanket, and nasal strips to help you go to sleep, sometimes your mind won’t “turn off.” I get it. There’s much to think about now that you’re about to have a baby. But I have found that listening to something soothing can help you drift off to sleep. That’s why getting an Audible membership is a second-trimester must-have. You can use it to listen to a good pregnancy and birth book or parenting book when you can’t fall asleep. Listening to a book or podcast will put you to sleep or help you learn something new!

8. Loose Dresses

Black Floral Smocked Long Sleeve Maternity Maxi Dress

Clothes are getting tighter at this point in your pregnancy, so you’ll want to invest in some new items you can enjoy wearing for the rest of your pregnancy. I recommend loose dresses because they are comfortable, can grow with you, and can even be worn after you have the baby. Maternity clothes are great, but having pieces in your closet that can be worn beyond pregnancy is a win in our book. This beautiful black floral smocked maxi dress is a perfect example. It even has pockets!

9. A Good Bra

BRAVADO! DESIGNS Maternity & Nursing Bra Seamless Double Layer, Wire-free, Adjustable for Breastfeeding

Hello, boobs! It’s no secret your belly isn’t the only thing that grows during pregnancy. Your breasts are also growing to a size you may have never experienced before, and underwires are probably not your friend. A good, supportive bra that fits properly is what you need! If you’re staying active, try Shock Absorber Bras. I also found a few great bralettes (like this or this one) that can work for you for months to come. They still provide support but are more breathable than other bras. They also make great sleeping bras! Getting a few good maternity bras or nursing bras is also a wise investment if you plan to breastfeed. I love the Bravado bras, and several of them come with a conversion kit to make them into regular bras when you’re done nursing!

10. A Doula

doula
Find a Doula Near You

A birth doula supports every woman and family for any type of labor and birth you choose. Whether you want a natural birth, a medicated birth, or a planned C-section, a doula is a great person to add to your support team to help you have the positive experience you want and deserve.16 This is the time during your pregnancy to start interviewing and choosing the right doula for you. Many of the good doulas book up quickly, so the sooner you start looking, the more options you will have available. Look at DONA International or DoulaMatch.net to find birth doulas near you. (Read more about what a doula is and why you should hire one here.)

Not only does your doula support you during birth, but they will also support you during your pregnancy. They will let you know all of the options available to you and resources in your area. They will answer your questions and help you prepare for your birthing day. And they will give you continuous labor support with massage, breathing techniques, comfort measures, being your advocate, and so much more.16 Having a birth doula has many benefits, and we want every soon-to-be mama to be supported and have the best pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience possible. You can also listen to our podcast episode, where two doulas talk about all things doulas.

More Helpful Things for the Second Trimester

The list below isn’t necessarily essentials or must-haves for the second trimester (though some women might beg to differ). However, they can be very beneficial to have! Here are items and activities that can be helpful during the second trimester of pregnancy:

1. Exercise

Prenatal yoga

Now that your nausea is subsiding (I hope!), it’s important to get active. Many women have good intentions to work out regularly but find themselves out of the habit after an exhausting and nauseating first trimester. The second trimester is perfect for taking up exercising during pregnancy. It will keep you fit, and because it makes you stronger and healthier, it can help you have a better labor and birth experience.10 Some great workouts are walking, prenatal yoga, and pilates. Whether joining a class in your area or buying a DVD and doing it at home, be sure to get up and get moving. The breathing and some of the poses you will do in these classes can also help you during your labor and birth.

2. Stay Hydrated

Young pregnant woman drinking water

As mentioned in our first-trimester must-haves list, staying hydrated during pregnancy is essential. It’s just as crucial in the second trimester, too.17 If you’re getting tired of water, you can also start drinking raspberry leaf tea! Raspberry leaf tea is a tremendous uterine toner that can help prepare your uterus for labor and delivery.11 I recommend drinking 1-2 cups per day in the second trimester and up to 3 cups in the third trimester. Grab your water bottle that you got in the first trimester and continue to fill it up!

3. Take Notes

Pregnant woman sitting on carpet and writing in a journal

Something you may have heard of during pregnancy is “pregnancy brain” or “mommy brain.” I experienced this during both of my pregnancies. It felt as if my babies were taking all my brain cells because I couldn’t remember even the simplest things! I recommend keeping a notebook handy to write all your lists and ideas that come to mind — baby-related or not. You can also keep your Notes app open on your smartphone, leave yourself voice recordings, or set reminders. I have found these things helpful when you’re in a rush and don’t want to forget something.

4. Eat Protein

pregnant woman eats healthy food for her unborn baby

Protein during pregnancy is critical for your baby’s growth. Since many women usually feel better in the second trimester, this is an excellent time to focus on your diet and eating protein. It’s recommended for pregnant women to have about 70-100 grams of protein per day, depending on their weight.13 Protein is especially important during the second and third trimesters when the fetus grows rapidly. This is why I suggest adding protein to each of your meals. Some good second trimester foods and protein sources are lean meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, beans, peas, nuts, seeds, and soy products.12

5. Surround Yourself With Support and Positivity

Group of female friends touching stomach of pregnant woman at baby shower. Close up.

Now that you can announce your pregnancy to the world, surround yourself with positive birth stories, positive birth images, positive affirmations, and positive women who will support you during this exciting time. Find a local support group, attend some prenatal yoga classes to meet other pregnant women, and reassure yourself that you can do this! You and your body are capable of having an enjoyable birth experience.

These are my second-trimester must-haves! What couldn’t you live without during your second trimester?

You may be wondering if there are some essentials that you need during the first trimester. Here is my list of first trimester must-haves.]]>
14 Must-Haves for Your First Trimester of Pregnancy

First off, congratulations! Pregnancy is such an exciting time, and I am thrilled for you and your family and how it’s about to get a little bigger. You may be wondering if there are some essentials you need during the first trimester. I’ve been asked this question many times by my doula clients, so I’ve created a list of precisely those things — the must-haves for each trimester of pregnancy! Let’s start with the first-trimester must-haves.

14 First Trimester Must-Haves

The first trimester of pregnancy is full of so many unknowns. Is what I’m feeling normal? Am I resting enough? Does everyone feel this awful/good? How much weight should I be gaining? Why am I so tired? Etc etc. While everyone has a different experience, there are a few essentials many women depend on at the beginning of their pregnancy that I think are relevant to almost any pregnancy. So, here are my first-trimester must-haves I recommend to every mama!

1. A Good Quality Prenatal Vitamin and Prenatal DHA Supplement

Taking a good prenatal vitamin during pregnancy (ideally, even before pregnancy) is a must-have for you and your growing baby.12 In the first trimester, morning sickness can ram its ugly head.21 When nothing sounds appetizing or if you’re having difficulty keeping your food down due to nausea, a prenatal vitamin can help ensure you’re getting the extra nutrients you both need.

There are also great benefits to taking a DHA supplement while pregnant. Research shows that mothers with high DHA levels during pregnancy have longer pregnancies and experience fewer preterm births (<34 weeks).1 Because of this, these babies tend to have higher birth weight and experience earlier visual gains and cognitive development.1,5,6,7,8,9,10,11

There are many different prenatal vitamins and prenatal DHA supplements on the market. I recommend researching, talking to your doctor/midwife, and choosing the right one for you. Check out this article if you’re unsure what to look for in a good prenatal vitamin because all vitamins are not created equal. Below, I’ve shared one of my favorite prenatal vitamins and prenatal DHA supplements.

2. A Good Pregnancy App

So much is happening inside your body now that you are growing a tiny human. It’s fascinating to learn how your body is changing and how your baby is growing! There are wonderful pregnancy apps available to download that will help you keep track of your progress. These pregnancy apps show your baby’s size each week, common pregnancy symptoms you may be experiencing, a countdown to your baby’s due date, and more. It’s a fun way to track your progress and learn new things about your baby. Some apps even have a short video each week explaining the developmental changes of your baby, which is fantastic!

If you’re interested in chatting with other women on the same journey, several pregnancy apps have message boards of pregnant women sharing their journeys. You can communicate with other expecting moms due your same month! I do want to warn you, though, to be careful reading community boards. Some can share scary stories, so proceed with caution on any forum.

3. Crackers

If you’re experiencing morning sickness, some foods can help ease the symptoms. It may sound silly, but saltine crackers can be very helpful. Foods high in starch, like saltines, can absorb gastric acid, which helps calm your stomach.22 Because nausea is often worse on an empty stomach, crackers can help fill your empty tummy and satisfy your hunger. They are bland without a strong taste or smell and have been a must-have for many pregnant women experiencing morning sickness for decades.

I recommend keeping a sleeve of crackers next to your bed so you don’t have to get out of bed to deal with your morning sickness. If you’re experiencing frequent nausea, I also suggest having some crackers everywhere you go. Keep them beside your bed, in your purse, and hidden throughout your house.

4. Peppermint Everything

Many women experience crazy bloating and digestive issues during their first trimester of pregnancy.23 To help soothe your stomach, I recommend drinking peppermint tea (caffeine-free), as it’s safe to drink one to two cups per day during pregnancy.13 If you are experiencing nausea, peppermint can help. Carrying peppermint candies in your purse or even smelling peppermint essential oil (read the best essential oils for your first trimester of pregnancy) can be a relief when you have a wave of sickness. Peppermint has helped many women get through their day when they are struggling with nausea, which is why it’s definitely on our list of first-trimester must-haves.

5. Ginger Candies

Ginger has been used since ancient times to help with gastrointestinal discomfort. Studies have shown ginger to be an effective and safe treatment for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.14 I’ve worked with hundreds of pregnant women, and so many of them have told me how sour candies and these ginger candies have helped them get through the first trimester and their nausea. Thus, these candies have made it on our first-trimester must-haves list! Throw a couple of these in your purse, keep some at your desk while you work, and even have a few on your nightstand. They’re nice to have close by when you need them!

6. A Good OB-GYN or Midwife

Close up shot of an expectant mother with her hand on her abdominal. Obstetrician is gently pressing on patients abdominal.

This is the most crucial first-trimester must-have for every pregnant woman — a good OB-GYN or midwife. Even if you have been with your doctor since you were a teenager, it’s essential to ask your doctor questions to ensure they are the right person to help you deliver your baby. What are their C-section rates? Episiotomy rates? How do they feel about delayed cord clamping and skin-to-skin? Ask them every question that’s important to you, and see how they respond.

Your care provider is a huge component of the type of birth experience you will have. You want someone who will support you with your birthing preferences and take the time to listen to you and answer all your questions. If you’re unsure about your doctor or midwife or see red flags, it’s never too late to switch and find the right person for you.

7. A Water Bottle

Staying hydrated during pregnancy is EVERYTHING! While pregnant, you need to drink more water than the average person because your water consumption tremendously helps you and your growing baby. It’s recommended to drink between 8 to 12 cups (64 to 96 ounces) of water daily during pregnancy.15 A few reasons are that the water you drink helps deliver nutrients to you and your baby, grows your placenta and the amniotic sac, helps with your doubled blood volume during pregnancy, and creates the amniotic fluid surrounding your baby.16

Because hydration is so important, especially during pregnancy, I recommend getting a cute water bottle to motivate you to drink. I suggest finding one with a straw to make it easier to sip on throughout your day. If you get tired of plain water, squeeze some lemon juice or add fruit for flavor. It’s a must to drink your water!

8. Electrolyte Drinks

Speaking of staying hydrated, while water consumption is significant, ensuring you get the right electrolyte balance is equally important. Electrolytes are minerals like magnesium, sodium, calcium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, and phosphate that have been dissolved in water. They help with various chemical reactions, including digestion, hydration, maintaining fluid balance, keeping your blood pH balanced, muscle function, and more.18

Also, amniotic fluid is about 98% water and electrolytes. This is another reason proper hydration and electrolytes are essential for your maternal health and baby’s development.19 Because of all this, the drinks below are must-haves to ensure mamas are getting the electrolytes that they and their babies need during the first trimester of pregnancy and beyond. Side note: While Gatorade is considered safe to drink during pregnancy, I wouldn’t make it my first choice since it is high in added sugar and contains food dyes.

9. A Pregnancy Journal

Pregnancy can be a wild journey. For some women, it’s a beautiful and enjoyable process. For others, it’s a challenging and uncomfortable time. Because pregnancy can be different from one woman to another, and even from one pregnancy to another for the same woman, it can be cathartic and therapeutic to process your experience by documenting it in a pregnancy journal.

A pregnancy journal is a fun and beautiful way to record your thoughts, feelings, experiences, and health during your journey. If you think about it, you’ll only be pregnant for so long and so many times in your life (even though it feels like forever). It is remarkable to look back on your pregnancy experience with each baby in your pregnancy journals. You can even compare them to your other pregnancies if you decide to have more children later.

Not only is it a great memento, but my doula clients have also found pregnancy journals helpful. They can easily see and be reminded of what symptoms they experienced during the first trimester of their previous pregnancies. It reminded them of what they could expect with their current pregnancy and what they did to help them feel better. It’s also something you can give to your child one day. How cool would it be for them to read through when they are older or having babies?!

10. Comforting Pregnancy and Birth Books and Websites

14 First Trimester Must-Haves | Baby Chick

When pregnant for the first time (or even the fifth time!), you probably wonder if every little change, twinge, and pull is normal. And that’s normal! When you’re unsure of what to expect, it’s good to find resources that bring you comfort and reassurance. Becoming more educated about pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood is a great first step in calming your fears. It can bring much peace during your pregnancy because you’ll be more knowledgeable about what is normal, what isn’t, and what may come. This is why reading good pregnancy and birth books and visiting evidence-based sites are on our first-trimester must-haves list.

Some resources I recommend getting during your first trimester are Ina May’s Guide to ChildbirthMayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy, NurturePregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn, and Baby Chick (the website you’re currently reading)!

11. TUMS and Heartburn Tea

Another not-so-fun symptom that is common in the first trimester of pregnancy is heartburn. Heartburn, or indigestion, is caused by hormonal changes in your body and the baby pressing against your stomach. Your pregnancy hormones cause the valve at the entrance to your stomach to relax and not close completely. This allows the acid from your stomach to move into your esophagus, causing heartburn.20

There are ways you can help ease indigestion and heartburn during pregnancy. You can change your diet and lifestyle, like cutting down on caffeine and foods that are rich, spicy, or fatty. There are also some teas and medicines that are safe to take in pregnancy. Having some Tums and drinking some tea to help with constant heartburn can help make your first trimester more bearable.20

12. Stretchy Pants and Elastic Waistbands

I’ve heard many pregnant women say they have never been gassier or felt more bloated in their life than when they were pregnant. When you’re only seven weeks pregnant but feel like you look five months pregnant, it can be very uncomfortable. This is when I recommend getting a belt extender to wear your pre-pregnancy pants a bit longer. You might also want to wear stretchy pants or leggings before you bite the bullet and purchase maternity pants. Here are some products that are great to wear for all stages of pregnancy and even postpartum! You can also check out our favorite maternity leggings.

13. KIND Bars

As I mentioned, if your stomach is too empty, it can sometimes make you feel nauseous. Many foods probably won’t sound appetizing during the first trimester, but a KIND granola bar is usually a safe option. I like that they’re low in sugar and have a ton of nuts and healthy ingredients. Nutrient-dense snacks are what you want to keep close by. This is especially true in the first trimester when you’re hungry, but nothing sounds satisfying, or you’re experiencing some food aversions. Keep a few of these bars stashed in your purse, in your car, and at work. For more, read our 22 pregnancy snacks to keep in your purse and delicious first trimester recipes.

14. Pregnancy Affirmation Cards

Having a positive mindset is everything in life. I know many newly expecting women are afraid that they might miscarry or that something will be wrong. It’s good to surround yourself with positivity in those times. I know how scary the first trimester can be. Because you can’t feel your baby move yet, you worry. That’s what mothers do — we worry about our children. This is why I recommend having pregnancy affirmation cards to read each day. They can remind you of what your body is doing, how it is capable, and how strong and beautiful you are. This can be so powerful and uplifting! The ones we’ve shared below are beautiful cards to bring positivity your way.

More Helpful Things for the First Trimester

The lists below aren’t necessarily essentials or must-haves for the first trimester, though some women would beg to differ. However, they can be beneficial to have. Here are the items and activities several of my clients and our community of moms have shared that have been helpful for them during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Nausea Relief

Besides the items we mentioned above, the following can help provide nausea relief:

 • Peppermint gum and mints: As I mentioned, peppermint helps with nausea.24 Chewing peppermint gum or having mints can also help if you have a bad taste in your mouth, which some women say they experienced a lot during their pregnancies.
 • Zofran: Some women’s nausea is so bad (for example, having hyperemesis gravidarum) that they need prescription medication, like Zofran, to help them.25 Do not feel guilty for asking your care provider for medication if you are struggling and genuinely need it.
 • Sour candy: Many women swear that sour candies help with their nausea.
 • Nausea relief bands: These bands stimulate an acupressure point that can help relieve nausea and vomiting. They’re a natural, reusable, and non-drowsy remedy without drugs or side effects. It’s a great option if nothing is working.
 • Vitamin B6: This is often suggested to women who experience morning sickness. A typical dose of vitamin B6 for morning sickness is 10 mg to 25 mg three times a day.26 Always talk to your health professional before you take vitamin B6 for morning sickness.
 • Emesis bags: You never know when a wave of nausea will hit you. To be prepared, and so you don’t always have to run to a toilet or trash can, have some portable, disposable throw-up bags. These are helpful in the car, on a plane, or anywhere you are experiencing morning sickness.

Other Useful Items

Here are some additional things you may find helpful in the first trimester:

 • Ice chips: Some women love to chew ice chips during pregnancy. If you are one of those women, a Nugget Ice Maker Machine could be helpful!
 • Watermelon: Not only is watermelon refreshing, but it is also a great natural source of vitamin B6, which helps with nausea.26,27 The high water content is also great for staying hydrated!27
 • SLEEP: It may sound silly, but growing a tiny human is exhausting. Please don’t feel guilty for taking a nap when you need it or for going to bed early. Your body is working hard every day. Allow your body to rest and get sleep when you can!
 • Cozy bra: Your breasts can be incredibly tender during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester.28 Wear some comfortable bras that have some stretch. You will notice that your breasts will not only be sensitive but get larger.

Tips and Activities

You may find these ideas helpful when navigating your first trimester:

 • Dress in layers: Some women will experience unpleasant body temperature fluctuations due to pregnancy hormones.29 Because of this, bring a light sweater when going out and dress in layers.
 • Go outside for a walk: You may be exhausted, but the movement and fresh air can help you feel better.
 • Talk about it: Whether you are feeling great or feeling crappy, talk to your friends and family about it. Knowing you have people who love and support you and want to help can make a huge difference.

Pregnant woman window shopping at jewelry store

It’s the seventh month of your nine-month-long pregnancy, and your body is starting to betray you. Your legs and feet are swollen, your heart is burning, and you’re always hungry. Though our bodies continuously change while growing another human being, many of our lifestyles usually don’t. You still might be working full-time, running around after other kids at home, or just walking around your house daily. One thing’s for sure — you’ll need something to support you while you’re supporting your growing baby. That all comes down to wearing the proper pair of shoes during pregnancy.

Best Shoes To Wear During Pregnancy

This might be something you’re currently wearing, but here’s a reminder: you should ALWAYS be wearing footwear in the house. Not only does it help prevent accidents like slipping or tripping on hardwood floors, but shoes in the house also provide you with the constant support your body (and your baby) will need!1 This list includes some of the best shoes to wear during pregnancy inside or outside the house (most options can work for either).

Best Sandals for Pregnancy

It’s normal to feel slightly hotter or warmer during pregnancy. Especially during summertime, the hot weather can raise the body temperature of a pregnant mama.2 You’ll want to stay cool during pregnancy and have some smart shoe options to help you feel comfortable, whether you’re in the heat or just having that pregnancy glow! Here are some great sandals that we recommend trying out.

Birkenstock Arizona Slides

They combine fashion and function and come in various colors and designs to suit anyone’s needs and preferences. They typically have a cork-style footbed with a leather or Birko-Flor (a soft, non-leather material) upper and can keep you comfy for days.

OOFOS OOriginal Sandal

I’m sure your podiatrist has told you to stay far away from flip-flops, and they’re typically correct. However, the OOriginal Sandal from OOFOS are an exception to the rule. These thongs are made of foam material that helps reduce stress on your feet and supports foot mobility. They’re another great option for pool or beach days.

Best Slippers for Pregnancy

My feet tend to be chilly in the house, especially during pregnancy. So, a sandal isn’t usually a good enough option for me. That’s why I recommend having a good pair of slippers, too! For slippers, you want something that resembles a shoe as much as possible. You can find some with a tougher outer sole without being super flimsy and soft, giving you foot support while keeping your feet warm. Rock those slippers, mama (but maybe not your fluffy, fragile bunny ones!).

Jessica Simpson Faux Fur Slippers

Wish you could wear fluffy slippers like we talked about? Well, these come close! These warm slippers give you a little fluff without sacrificing foot support. They have a thick memory foam cushion, providing support and comfort. Plus, the anti-slip sole offers grip on floors to help prevent you from sliding. They’re also machine-washable and come in various colors and patterns, including leopard print and rainbow sequins.

Best Running Shoes for Pregnancy

You may have noticed by now that our list hasn’t included any heels. Newsflash: Those will only hurt and not help you during your pregnancy. The fancy fashion shoe is fine for a few hours on the town, but you’ll want some supportive options as your maternity wardrobe staples. Running/walking shoes are vital for being comfortable as a new mama, and many options exist!

Made with a leather upper, genuine shearling lining, and a Treadlite sole, these mini Uggs are durable and cushiony, perfect for the cold weather.

After all this shoe talk, you may wonder, what on earth are you talking about? I’m pregnant — shoes are not my friend, and I’m way more comfortable being barefoot! Although you might feel more comfortable without shoes during pregnancy, over time, you may regret that decision as you put more and more pressure on your feet. Having support 24/7 is an integral part of keeping mom and baby safe, comfortable, and happy in the long run.

2 Unconventional (But Hugely Helpful) Baby Registry Items

Here are two more hugely beneficial registry items to consider requesting.

1. Postpartum Care Items for Mom

Baby registries are all about baby gear, clothes, and, well . . . everything, baby. But mamas are the MVPs in bringing new humans earthside – and must be taken care of too. FridaMom offers postpartum recovery kits for both C-section and vaginal deliveries and a breast care kit. Earth Mama is another excellent option for postpartum care items.

2. A Meal Train

Sure, a meal train might not be the first thing one thinks of when creating a baby registry. However, nothing compares to the gift of homemade, ready-to-serve (bonus points for hot) food delivered right to the front door of any new baby’s home. Plus, plenty of people genuinely want to help new parents in ways that are needed in the postpartum phase. Food preparation is one of them.

With an abundance of high-quality, must-have baby products available for modern-day parents, new moms and dads are bound to have personal preferences for all necessities. Still, we can all agree that anything intended to ease the transition into raising tiny humans is golden. The must-have products in our list are some of the most sought-after ones seasoned parents wish had been on their registry. If you’re still building yours, hopefully, this list helps keep you from registry regret down the road.

Navigate skin changes during pregnancy: Learn about pregnancy-safe skincare ingredients and which pose a risk.]]>
Collage of skincare products that are safe to use during pregnancy.

Pregnancy comes with many changes—no more wine down Wednesdays, sushi boats, deli sandwiches, and venti Frappuccinos. But just when you thought you were already limited about what you put in your body, we’re here to share that it also matters what you put on your body. Finding pregnancy-safe skincare products is essential since your skin is the largest organ and is very porous. Anything you put on your face and body is easily absorbed. That includes your prized face washes, moisturizers, serums, and sunscreens that you use daily to keep your skin healthy and free of blemishes and dryness, thanks to pregnancy hormones.1,2

With many skin care products containing harmful chemicals, we’ve created a quick guide that breaks down harmful and safe ingredients and products we love and trust.

Common Skin Changes During Pregnancy

You should be aware of some common skin changes during pregnancy.

Melasma

Often referred to as chloasma or the “mask of pregnancy,” melasma is a skin condition causing brown or tan patches on the face as a result of an increase in the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Expectant moms may notice these blotches on their cheeks, nose, forehead, chin, arms, or above their upper lip.3

While not all women get melasma, some are genetically predisposed, which can increase their chances. Some moms-to-be may have a family history of the condition, while others with a light-brown complexion and who were born in an area with high sun exposure are more prone to developing it. Women who’ve taken birth control pills are also more likely to develop this hyperpigmentation due to their high number of hormones.4

Acne

Unfortunately, pregnancy isn’t always all about the glow. Thanks to increased hormones in your body during the first trimester, your oil glands produce more natural oils and cause clogged pores and dreaded breakouts. If you suffered from acne before your pregnancy, you’re at higher risk of experiencing acne during pregnancy as well. Up to 43% of women experience acne while pregnant.5,6

Stretch Marks

Pregnancy and stretch marks almost feel synonymous with one another. Close to 90% of pregnant moms develop stretch marks during their pregnancy due to genetics, skin type, age, and birth weight. For many mommas-to-be, stretch marks appear on their belly since it stretches to make room for their growing baby. These tiger stripes, as some moms lovingly call them, can be pink, red, or a faint color depending on your skin tone and can also appear on your glutes, breasts, and thighs.7,8

Linea Nigra

Linea nigra, or “the pregnancy line,” is a dark vertical line that extends from your pubic bone up to your belly button during pregnancy. With each trimester, the line may darken and become more visible, especially for those with a darker complexion. Typically, around 20 weeks of gestation, a linea nigra will become noticeable.9

Skincare Product Ingredients to Avoid While Pregnant

If you’re unsure whether the products currently crowding your vanity are safe, we’ve created a short guide of ingredients that can be detrimental to your little one. Double-check your product labels to see if any of these substances are listed:

Retinoids

Retinoids are derived from vitamin A and are used to treat acne, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and improve skin texture. While it’s great for keeping your skin clear and youthful, it can cause serious harm to your growing baby. Studies have found that high doses of retinoids during pregnancy can increase the risk of fetal retinoid syndrome, characterized by a slew of physical birth defects in infants. Some differences range from heart abnormalities and excess fluid around a baby’s brain to growth delays and an increased chance of a cleft palate.10,11

While some over-the-counter skin care products may contain small amounts of retinoids, avoiding them is best. Keep an eye out for any vitamin A derivatives in topical treatments, including retinol, retinyl, and tretinoin, as well as prescribed oral medications, like isotretinoin.12,13

Salicylic Acid

Although there’s insufficient research to determine dosage amounts and potential fetal risks associated with salicylic acid during pregnancy, some experts recommend that pregnant moms add this acne fighter and exfoliant to their “do not use” list.14

The concern? Salicylic acid is related to aspirin, linked to various risks, including pregnancy loss and congenital defects, when taken in high doses. While it has not been backed by research, there may be a possibility that salicylic acid could have similar effects.15,16

Oxybenzone

An active ingredient commonly found in commercial sunscreens, oxybenzone has received a lot of backlash in recent years, with studies highlighting its effect on the environment and the reproductive health of animals. Oxybenzone is known to disrupt the function of organs in the body, such as the skin, kidneys, brain, and endocrine system. The chemical can also pass through the skin and the placenta, causing harmful effects on the development of a fetus during pregnancy.17,18,19

Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is a topical skin-lightening agent for treating hyperpigmentation, such as dark spots and patches. While hydroquinone is highly effective at lightening the skin, it has received negative attention from the FDA, which has banned the use of the ingredient in over-the-counter products and deemed it unsafe for pregnant and non-expectant consumers.20,21

Hydroquinone limits the skin’s natural production of melanin, and it’s also considered a carcinogenic ingredient linked to rashes and eye injuries. More serious issues include thyroid disorder, leukemia, liver damage, and exogenous ochronosis, a permanent skin discoloration that’s a blue-black hue).22,23,24

Phthalates

Phthalates, a synthetic chemical that makes plastics soft and flexible, are used in many products families use daily—hair products, cosmetics, toys, food packaging, detergents, you name it. Unfortunately, plastic additives are known to be endocrine disruptors, meaning they can wreak havoc with normal hormone functions in both moms and babies.25,26

A study from the National Institutes of Health also discovered that pregnant mothers exposed to multiple phthalates during pregnancy had a higher chance of preterm birth. Additional research has identified several other health risks, from preeclampsia, maternal glucose disorders, and interference with thyroid functionality in moms leading to growth restriction, behavioral and cognitive disorders, and issues with the neuroendocrine system in infants.26,27,28

What to Look for in Skin Care Products During Pregnancy

Although you need to part ways with a handful of ingredients (at least for the next nine months of your pregnancy and if you plan to breastfeed), there is a silver lining for your skin. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has confirmed several safe additives to use in your pregnancy-safe skincare routine so you don’t have to say goodbye to your mornings and nights of pampering completely. Here are four ingredients that won’t bring harm to you and your baby:8

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide prevents acne-causing bacteria from growing on the skin and is considered safe for pregnant moms. Only a small amount of the antiseptic is absorbed through the skin using topical, over-the-counter acne products.2,29,30

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is on the yes list of ingredients moms can use while carrying. As a naturally occurring substance that the body produces in the eyes, joints, and skin, hyaluronic acid is a holy grail for pregnant mommas. It helps retain the skin’s moisture, flexibility, and elasticity—all common issues expectant mothers struggle with throughout their pregnancy.14,30,31

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is a type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that acts as an exfoliant for the skin to remove dead skin cells, treat acne and acne scars, and reduce spotting (dark patches, freckles, and sunspots). While ACOG has given glycolic acid the green light as a pregnancy-safe ingredient, it’s important to note that products should contain concentrations lower than 10 percent.32,33

Vitamin C

If you’re concerned about hyperpigmentation, vitamin C is a safe alternative in creams or serums to lighten your skin while pregnant. Vitamin C also has anti-aging properties that can protect your skin against damage from UV rays and also keep your skin looking younger with its ability to increase collagen in the skin.34,35

Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is generally safe to use and is another substitute to help with inflamed acne and hyperpigmentation. Keep in mind there are not enough controlled studies on the usage of azelaic acid during pregnancy, but animal studies have not reported harmful effects on fetuses or newborns. It’s recommended to use azelaic acid on small surface areas of your skin and to avoid it within the first trimester.14,36,37

Happy couple giving each other a hug while she holds the pregnancy test with pregnancy news.

You just saw those two pink lines on your pregnancy test. Is there anything more exciting? The minute you share the big news with your partner is the best! If this is something you have wanted for a long time, or even if it’s a surprise, letting your partner in on your secret is one of the first steps in your pregnancy journey.

But now that you know, how will you surprise them? There are so many great ideas to tell your partner you are pregnant that it’s hard to narrow down to just a few. So, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most fun ways to spread the news.

25 Ways to Tell Your Partner You Are Pregnant

1. Wrap Up the Positive Test

Sure, this one has been around for years, but it is still a good one. If your partner isn’t expecting a present because it’s not their birthday or a holiday, you may catch them completely off guard—simple, easy, and effective.

2. Make a Dinner of Baby Foods

Yep, we are stealing this one from Full House. Do you remember when Aunt Becky found out she was pregnant and wanted to share her excitement with Uncle Jesse? She created a spread of baby foods. No, not baby food, but baby foods. She had baby back ribs, baby corn, and baby shrimp on the plate. At first, he didn’t get it, but as soon as it sank in, he was thrilled. A ’90s throwback and we love it.

3. Play a Song

There are lots of baby songs out there. Make a playlist and see if they catch on. You could add Hit Me Baby One More Time, Baby Got Back, Always Be My Baby, or throw it way back and get them with Having My Baby or Baby Come Back. Bonus: This is also a super-fun thing to have playing in the background at a baby shower.

4. Give Them a T-shirt That Says Mom or Dad

Who doesn’t love a comfy T-shirt? Present your partner with a tee that says, mom or dad. It is also fun to add “Established:” and insert the year the baby is due. We bet they will wear their new duds proudly in the next few months. Heck, it might even make it into the delivery room.

5. Give Them a Tax Deduction Form

A new baby means saving some money on your taxes. Put something on paper that looks like an official document and present it to them. Make sure they read it closely and add something clever, like a new deduction coming in. We may have used this one with our partner, who still talks about it!

6. Let Big Brother or Sis Get in on the Game

If there is a sibling, get them involved. You can make or buy a shirt for the sibs, just like the mom or dad shirt. Kids get particularly excited and proud to announce they will be a big brother or sister and be part of the fun!

7. Give Them a Shopping List

Tell them it’s their turn to run to the store. Make sure you write down the essentials like milk, bread, and eggs, and add diapers. This is for the first-timers or those with older kids no longer in diapers. Funny joke, and you’re sure to get a smile.

8. Make it a Joke

This one is for the guys. Presenting a book of dad jokes can be pretty funny. They only have a few months to start learning some zingers but trust us; this won’t go to waste. But you may regret it someday.

9. Lottery Ticket

Have you seen this? You can find them online, and they look like lottery tickets, but instead of money, it announces a pregnancy. Slip it in with a couple of other lottery tickets, and they’ll never know what hit them.

10. Download a Countdown App

You could put a countdown app on your phone or theirs and leave it open. Or you could just put it on one day and see if they notice. This may be a very quick reveal for the tech-savvy, or you will have to point it out. It’s a good one.

11. Do You Have a Favorite Pet?

Your dog or cat is in for a significant change soon too. Put a sign around their neck and let them share the news. The pet lover will fall hard for this one.

12. Is Your Partner A Sports, Concert, or Theater Fan?

Tell them you got tickets to an event and hand them a fake stub. Fill in fun details, like your due date, doctor, and your names. They will certainly be entertained!

13. Share a Photo

If you head to the doctor before you make your announcement, you can share a sonogram picture. This is a great way to tell your partner you are pregnant and make it officially official. And when you see your baby on the screen, it’s an incredible feeling and moment to share.

14. Say it With a Card

A card is another simple but fun way to tell them you’re expecting. Buy a card that says “You + Me = Three” The card may throw them off for a second, but when they get it, they’ll love it.

15. Sit Them Down to Play a Game

You can get them with a board game in many ways. Rig a game of Scrabble and go first, spelling out your announcement. Wheel of Fortune letters that spell out I’m Pregnant are clever. Or tell them with a puzzle. The anticipation might get you, but it is fun.

16. Throw Some Baby Clothes in the Laundry

Make sure that your partner oversees the folding that day. A couple of onesies, a sleeper, and a baby blanket will get their attention. Just wait until they are folding dozens of those a week. Babies are messy!

17. Put a Bun in the Oven

A classic play on words. Tell them to check the timer because you have “a bun in the oven.” You may have to repeat yourself several times, but hopefully, they’ll catch on quickly. Put some real bread in there because pregnancy makes you hungry, and doesn’t butter on warm bread sound delicious?

18. Stock the Cabinets

Grab some bottles, maybe a couple of baby food jars, and a bib. Ask them to grab you something from the cabinet and wait for their reaction. They better get used to those bottles, though. There’s a lot of feeding in their future.

19. Put It on the Bottom of Their Cup

Coffee, beer, a glass of water? It doesn’t matter. Another fun way to tell your partner you are pregnant is to get a glass or mug printed that tells them they will be a parent. Depending on what was in that glass, they may decide to have another immediately.

20. Give Them Something that Says, Grandma or Grandpa

Want to really confuse them? Instead of a shirt or card that says mom or dad, hand them something that says grandma or grandpa and tell them to give it to their parents. It might take a second to sink in, but it’s a winner. And it serves a double purpose because it’s a real gift they can give. And if you think telling a partner is fun, grandparents are amazing!

21. Give Them Some Reading Material

This could be a book to read to your baby or something to read for themselves in preparation for the baby’s birth. A book is a fun keepsake you can hold onto for a long time.

22. Stuffed Animal with a Voice Recording Inside

These are fun. Grab a teddy for the baby and have your voice recorded inside to tell them the good news. These are special to share with your kids when they are older. You can also do this with your baby’s heartbeat at your next ultrasound.

23. Write It on the Dessert

Do they love cookies? Cake? Heck, it could even be a cookie cake! Write a message on top letting them know that life is going to change in a big way. But be sure to take pics. This one probably won’t last very long.

24. Fortune Cookie

Who doesn’t love to read their fortune after a delicious meal? Order up some fried rice and orange chicken and stuff that growing belly. After you finish, let them read their fortune. Inside will be no ordinary message, but we hope it puts a smile on their face.

25. Just Tell Them!

There is also nothing wrong with blurting it out straight from the bathroom. Not everyone needs a grandiose surprise. And let’s be honest, sometimes you can’t wait!

Have your camera ready no matter how you choose to tell your partner you are pregnant. You will want to remember the priceless look on your partner’s face for a long time.
