One of the most important decisions you’ll make when pregnant is where you will give birth to your child. There are so many options out there that it can be hard to figure out which will be best for you and your baby ahead of time. You just don’t have a lot to go on. Meeting with doctors ahead of time can only tell you so much, especially since that probably won’t be the doctor who actually delivers your baby. The good news is that U.S. News & World Report offers a comprehensive list to help you figure out the best hospitals in your area.1

Best Hospitals for Maternity Services

This list is more than just a rating. Instead, it is an evaluation of uncomplicated pregnancies. The goal is to provide in-depth information for people researching the best local hospital to give birth. When choosing a hospital, you want a complete picture of what to expect and which are the best in your area. This report helps you figure out just those things so you can go into birth, which can be overwhelming and scary, knowing you are at the best hospital possible.

What goes into this report?

Services

Understanding the hospital’s services is necessary when you decide to give birth somewhere. You need to know if they offer additional consultants and what other benefits they may have.

Amenities like private rooms

Private rooms can be a big deal for your comfort level while giving birth. You don’t want to end up in a room with someone else if you aren’t prepared for it. It could throw everything off, and many women like the privacy of having their own space. Giving birth is a highly messy and personal experience; you will probably need your own room afterward to decompress.

Valet Parking

When I had my second baby, I wished my husband had known the hospital provided valet parking. It can be beneficial when you are in labor and want to get out of the car and be admitted. My second came much faster, and I was ready to be there when we arrived. Unfortunately, there was nowhere for him to park. Other people helped me inside, and I waited a while for him to come in while going through contractions in the lobby. My phone also died during this time because I hadn’t plugged it in the night before since I had been timing my contractions with it.

Child birthing classes

Birthing classes were so helpful with my first. I had no idea what to expect. Birthing classes can give you great information so you know how things will go at the hospital. You also usually get a maternity hospital tour along with these classes, so you can get eyes on where you will be giving birth. This tour can help a lot to help make you more comfortable.

How does this differ from others?

A significant difference in this report is that it considers the amenities listed above. Many of these things are good to have and can make your pregnancy and hospital stay go much more smoothly and comfortably. Giving birth is hard enough. Whatever little extra touches a hospital has can make an enormous difference in your experience.

The Scope of the Information

There were 2,700 hospitals nationwide that offer maternity services, and 237 of them earned recognition among the best. Hospitals had to submit data from 2019 on their performance to be recognized, but there was no fee to participate. This report offers a complete picture by considering more information, such as amenities, when ranking. This information helps you make the best decision for you and your birth experience.

The Results

California had the most high-performing hospitals, 33, which makes sense since the state is so large. New Jersey, Illinois, Colorado, Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Carolina followed. Some states didn’t have any hospitals that were considered high-performing: DC, DE, GA, HI, MS, NM, RI, SD, TN, and WV. That isn’t to say that there aren’t any great hospitals in those states, but they didn’t meet the set criteria. They were still evaluated on individual metrics but didn’t receive an overall rating.

You can see the report here to find out if your hospital is among the highest performing and use that list as an excellent guide to get started evaluating hospitals in your area. It is still important to take a tour and see for yourself to make the best decision for you and your baby.
